Syreeta Gates and I were asked to bring LEGO’s first activation at ComplexCon to life in November of 2021, in our role as Most Incredible Studio. In collaboration with adidas, we decorated two large scale adidas shoes built out of LEGO bricks, and for a job so large, we collaborated with another LEGO artist, Adam Ward. With him, we were able to achieve the largest collaboration amongst Black LEGO artists to date!
Our concept was the Sound and Style of the culture - my shoe represents the sound, and Syreeta’s represents the style. We decorated the shoe live in front of over 60,000 attendees in Long Beach.
My shoe included equalizer bars that you might see on boomboxes, as well as MPC buttons and a screen that reads ‘ComplexCon’.
The other side of the shoe includes a large vinyl record and play, pause, rewind, fast-forward, stop, and record buttons.
As part of the activation, attendees who participated in a raffle were able to win both of our shoe designs at the scale of the original adidas x LEGO set.
