Shortly before my season of LEGO Masters premiered on FOX in June of 2021, I began building my next project, based on the sign in front of the Chicago Theatre, which is located in the ‘Loop’ of the city of Chicago. The goal here was to create an artistic interpretation of the famed venue, and present it in the round for attendees at LEGO conventions and exhibitions.
SNOT (studs not on top) technique to achieve the lines of ‘lights’ that dance in the yellow pipes of the sign.
Researching the construction and history of the Chicago Theatre and its sign out front, I followed the way it was originally built and incorporated that into the construction of this build.
This is built in a modular fashion in order for it to travel well.
I waited 3 months (!) for LEGO to coincidentally manufacture a specific white part that allowed me to continue and accurately capture the design of the sign.
The top of the sign includes some creative usage of a frog and croissant to represent the white detail on the actual sign.
The marquee was built in the round, unlike what it looks like in real life, and made space for an extension of the marquee design, inferred by yours truly.
I won the Biggest Bestest award at BrickFair VA in August 2022, and 1 of 2 Judges’ Awards at Brickworld Chicago 2023, the largest LEGO convention in the United States.
